What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
- ICAS Assessments: Students have the opportunity to participate in ICAS competitions across subjects such as Mathematics, English allowing them to challenge themselves at a national and international level.
- Rotary Writing Competition: Encouraging creative and persuasive writing skills, this competition provides students with an opportunity to showcase their literary talents.
- Student Representative Council (PBL Ambassadors and AECG): Students can represent their peers and take on leadership roles to help drive initiatives that benefit the school community.
- Leadership Programs: We provide various leadership opportunities for students, equipping them with skills in teamwork, decision-making, and public speaking. For example, the buddy program.
- Digital Tech Day (Years 2-5): A dedicated day for students to explore digital technologies, coding, and robotics through hands-on experiences.
- Digital Design Program: Students with a passion for digital arts and design can contribute to the production of Starstruck, showcasing their creativity in an exhibition of digital design skills. Opportunities for 3D printing and coding are also offered.
- Starstruck: Talented performers can participate in this large-scale performing arts event, which brings together students from across the region to showcase their musical, dance, and theatrical abilities.
- Drumming Club: Students can explore rhythm, coordination, and teamwork while developing percussion skills in our fun and engaging Drumming Club.
- Guitar Lessons: Guitar lessons offer students the opportunity to learn foundational music skills, chords, and techniques in a supportive small group setting.
- Performing Arts Camp: Our Performing Arts Camp allows students to immerse themselves in music, drama, and dance, building confidence and creativity through collaborative performance experiences.
- PSSA Sporting Opportunities: Students have the chance to represent the school in competitive sports such as soccer, netball, rugby league, and athletics, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.
- Inclusive Sport in Schools: Our inclusive sport programs ensure that all students, regardless of ability, have opportunities to participate, stay active, and enjoy the benefits of teamwork and physical activity.
- Opportunity Class Placement: We encourage eligible students to apply for Year 5 opportunity class placements, providing an enriched educational environment tailored to high-achieving learners. Further, opportunities for the NHS SAIL program or Merewether placement testing, HSPA and Hunter Sports High placement (for Year 6 students).
- Individualised Learning Plans: Our educators develop personalised plans to cater to the unique strengths and interests of high potential and gifted students.
- Extracurricular Enrichment: A variety of clubs and activities, such as STEM workshops and creative writing groups, extend learning beyond the standard curriculum.
- Collaborative Learning Hub: Our state-of-the-art learning hub facilitates co-teaching and collaborative learning to promote growth and peer interaction.
- Participation in State Programs: Students can engage in initiatives like the Junior and Senior State Music Camps, providing high-level extension opportunities.
- Premier's Spelling Bee: The Premier's Spelling Bee challenges students to develop their vocabulary and spelling skills in a fun, competitive environment that celebrates language learning.
